5 LinkedIn Mistakes

“I don’t want to update my LinkedIn in case my current employer sees and thinks I’m looking for a job.”

My philosophy is that you should keep your LinkedIn updated and always keep your thumb on the pulse.

Big corporations won’t think twice about laying you off when times get tough.

Why sacrifice building a network and keeping your options open when your job is never 100% secure?

Always keep your LinkedIn updated, in case that next great opportunity comes your way!

And if your manager notices, they should appreciate that you are growing your network with a profile that promotes their company.

Here are the top 5 LinkedIn mistakes I see people make:

1.     They list their current position under their headline

When people see your headline committed to an organization, it conveys the message that you are not open to new opportunities.

With all the layoffs, we should always keep our options open.

Make a headline focused on your dream position and see what opportunities might come your way.

2.     They don’t have a banner photo

Having a banner photo is a great way to showcase your expertise.

Use Canva to create a banner that serves your job search goals.

3.     They don’t have an about section, or it’s really short

Your about section is your opportunity to tell your story.

It allows you to humanize yourself in the job search.

Use this space to share your career story, passions, and skills.

4.     Limiting connections to people they know

How can we network if we only accept connections of people we know?

If there is a company, you really want to work for, connect with someone there and strike up a conversation.

You never know who you may meet.

5.     Not getting LinkedIn recommendations

LinkedIn recommendations are a great way to prove your skills and qualities from previous colleagues and managers.

It can replace reference letters, and hiring managers can easily see you are a sought-after employee.
