Should I Stay or Should I Go? Making Career Decisions

This week’s podcast episode, Grace Fabian, shared some valuable content on whether it’s time to move on from your job. Here are some insights from her podcast episode:

Why Is This Decision So Hard?

Work has evolved. It’s no longer just about a paycheck—it’s about purpose, fulfillment, and impact. Many professionals are re-evaluating what they truly want from their careers, especially after the disruptions of the last few years. But while opportunities are expanding, so are challenges like AI-driven job shifts, economic uncertainty, and burnout.

Adding to the complexity, most of us chose our careers when we were barely adults—before we even knew who we were. As we grow and change, our jobs don’t always grow with us.

Signs It’s Time to Consider Moving On

If you’re constantly feeling stressed, trapped, stuck, or overwhelmed—it’s worth taking a closer look at whether your job is still serving you. Here are some key indicators:

  • You experience chronic Sunday Scaries – Dreading the workweek every single weekend is a major red flag.

  • You feel undervalued or stagnant – If you’re not learning, growing, or being recognized, frustration can set in fast.

  • Your work negatively impacts your mental and physical health – Anxiety, stress, or even physical symptoms like shaking on your way to work are serious signs to pay attention to.

  • You’re out of alignment with your values – Maybe you once loved your role, but now it doesn’t match who you are or what you stand for.

  • You’ve already tried making it work – If you’ve set boundaries, communicated your needs, and made tweaks—but nothing is improving—it’s time to rethink things.

What If You’re Not That Miserable, But You’re Just Meh?

Not every job move needs to come from total burnout. If you’re just feeling uninspired, it could be worth exploring ways to add more meaning to your role. Could you:

✔️ Shift your responsibilities?

✔️ Advocate for a promotion or new project?

✔️ Explore outside passions that bring more fulfillment?

If you’ve done all of this and still feel unfulfilled, it may be time to move on.

The Mindset Shift: You’re Not Stuck

One of the biggest reasons people stay in the wrong job is the belief that they have no other options. But that’s just not true.

Studies show that professionals who change jobs every 3-5 years earn more than those who stay put. Plus, you’re always evolving—just by living your life, learning new skills, and adapting to changes in technology and industry trends. You’re more capable of pivoting than you might think.

Next Steps if You’re Ready to Leave

1️⃣ Clarify what you really want – Dig deep into your values, interests, and what energizes vs. drains you.

2️⃣ Assess the job market – Look at opportunities that align with your new career vision.

3️⃣ Network strategically – Connect with people in roles or industries that interest you.

4️⃣ Prepare your exit plan – Whether that’s updating your resume, building a financial cushion, or negotiating a smooth transition.

Making a change doesn’t mean you failed—it means you’re growing. If you’re feeling the clash question creeping in, take it as a sign to re-evaluate.

So… should you stay, or should you go? Only you can decide—but you don’t have to figure it out alone.
