Using LinkedIn for your job search

While doing LinkedIn updates, I always receive questions on whether LinkedIn is really worth it and how to use it in their job search.

LinkedIn is worth it!  It's like constantly attending networking events without actually showing up just by having a profile.

77% of recruiters used LinkedIn in their recruiting efforts, so having an updated profile is so worth it.

Here are a few ways you can use your LinkedIn profile in your job search:

1.     Update your profile to reflect your career direction

Most people will write their LinkedIn profile for where they are now.  Using company-branded banner photos and stating their current position in the headline.

Instead, I recommend branding your LinkedIn based on your career goals and always keeping your options open.

Many of my clients have updated their profiles to reflect their desired career goals and have received multiple messages from recruiters shortly after.

2.     Connect and start conversations with others in your field

Because LinkedIn is a professional networking app, it is accepted to connect with others in your field or your desired field to enhance your professional network.

Connecting with others and creating conversation develops relationships that can be leveraged when looking for a new role.

Many people share that they appreciate meeting new people through LinkedIn and appreciate a conversation with new connections.

3.     Ask for informational interviews

Informational interviews are a great way to get to know someone, how they landed in their career, and if they have any advice for you in the next stages of your career.

So many people are willing and able to help; we just don't reach out and ask.

4.     Use the search bar effectively

The LinkedIn search bar is quite comprehensive.  You can use it to search for available individuals, companies, and jobs.

If you are looking for individuals in Project Management, you can type "Project Manager" in the search bar and filter your search by location, company, and more.

Try it and see what kinds of connections are suggested to you!

5.     Monitor who posts jobs on LinkedIn

When looking at jobs posted on LinkedIn, it will occasionally tell you who the hiring team is.

This is a unique opportunity to reach out to them and send them a quick message letting them know you applied for the role they posted.

Sending them a short message shows them you are taking the extra step to get noticed and will help them remember your name when looking through resumes.
