Don't Just Find a Job, Find the Right Job

Have you ever felt like you’re rowing against the current at work? It’s a frustrating experience, often caused by a simple but critical issue—misalignment between your personal values and your company’s mission. The more your values and career goals align with your workplace, the more likely you are to thrive.

This week on the Destination Dream Job Podcast, I welcome Gerry Gadoury who focuses on cultural fit in the workplace and how to land the right job.

Why Cultural Fit Matters

When you and your company share the same direction, everything flows more smoothly. You’re motivated, engaged, and able to perform at your best. However, when there’s a disconnect, it creates friction—leading to dissatisfaction, lower performance, and eventually, the desire to leave.

Imagine being a passionate environmentalist working for a company that prioritizes profit over sustainability. No matter how great the job looks on paper, that fundamental mismatch will make it difficult to feel fulfilled. The same principle applies to any misalignment between your core values and an organization’s culture.

The Interview Is a Two-Way Street

Too often, job seekers enter interviews with a one-sided mindset, focusing only on impressing the employer. But remember: the interview isn’t just for them to evaluate you—it’s also your opportunity to assess whether the company is a good fit for you.

Look beyond the company’s marketing and PR—check out LinkedIn profiles of employees, especially those in your potential department. Do they seem engaged and happy?

During the interview, ask intentional questions about company culture, leadership, and values. Some key questions to consider:

  • Why do you enjoy working here?

  • What career growth opportunities exist within the company?

  • How does the company support employees’ professional development?

Take Control of Your Job Search

Finding the right job isn’t just about salary or job title—it’s about working in an environment that aligns with your goals and values. A well-matched workplace will not only improve your career satisfaction but also increase your chances of long-term success.
